Ladda Tammy Duckworth is so much more than just an American politician. She is the U.S. Representative, a Democrat who represents the 8th Congressional District in Illinois. She is also an Iraq war veteran, she is the first Asian American woman elected to Congress in Illinois, the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and the first member of Congress born in Thailand. She is also pregnant.
Born in Thailand, her American father, Franklin, who died in 2005, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who traced his family’s roots in America back to before the Revolutionary War. Her mother, Lamai, a Thai, has Chinese ancestry. Because of her father’s work with the United Nations and international companies, the family moved around Southeast Asia.
She previously served as Assistant Secretary for Public and Intergovernmental Affairs in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. She was the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.
As a of the Iraq war, Duckworth served as a U.S. Army helicopter pilot and suffered severe combat wounds, losing both of her legs and damaging her right arm. She was the first female double amputee from the war. Having received a medical waiver, she continued to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois Army National Guard along with her husband, Major Bryan W. Bowlsbey, a signal officer and fellow Iraq War veteran.
What makes her story so compelling now is that she is in her last month of pregnancy and cannot travel… According to Greta Van Susteren…
This is the worst! DEMOCRATIC WAR ON WOMEN! Rep Tammy Duckworth lost two legs fighting in Iraq when her helicopter went down in 2004. She is now pregnant (in the last month of her pregnancy) and her doctors tell her not to travel. That means she must stay in her District until the child is born in next few weeks. Here is the outrage: Democrats will NOT let her vote by proxy (absentee ballot) when they have their vote for House Democratic Leadership positions. OUTRAGEOUS! Leader Pelosi needs to fix this PRONTO.
I agree with Greta Van Susteren, this patriotic leader’s voice needs to be counted.
